Themes: Lives of Women in Punjab; The Partition of 1947.

About the Reading and Discussions Sessions.

We will read and discuss only those parts that describe histories of girls and women – married, unmarried, widowed, abandoned, rich, poor, middle class and working, high caste, low caste, without children, with children, with money, without money, missionary, Sikh, Muslim, Hindu, British – in Punjab, in the 20 years or so before partition, and in the displacement that followed.

We will follow events in the sequence they occur in the book.
Ambitious though it is, we would have to ‘uncover’ about 150 pages a day.
Discussions on honor, identity, religion, tradition, patriotism, nationalism, martyrdom, freedom, war would surface from readings of the book and also from places we visit.
